Customer Reviews

this monitor will break on you
Google this monitor online. This monitor has a known defect. You will get gray/black horizontal lines across the screen after a few months. Don't buy it. Samsung customer service is supposed to be great...but why deal with the hassle. I prefer my products not to break so I don't have to know if the customer service is good or not. Now I have to buy another monitor.

-a frustrated buyer :(

Pleased with my purchase
Primarily, I bought this widescreen monitor in order to be able to watch European DVDs, and I'm very pleased with its performance for that and the other more utilitarian reasons for such a purchase. Samsung is a great brand that gives value for the money. For the record, I checked several authoritative sources of recommendations before I placed my order.

SyncMaster 245BW Widescreen
Pros: Big lineup of positive goodies.
1. Very flexible on Vista once the driver has been loaded (highly needed in order to view in high resolutions).
2. Video is crisp, clean, and clear (especially for some of the gaming that I do on this machine).
3. Has soft power-off (aka Standby) and a physical power switch on the back which is handy for when you have to unplug due to a severe storm.
4. The stand base has pivot footing so that you can turn the monitor. Riser and the north/south tilting is smooth.
5. Good for DVD movies (especially in widescreen mode).
6. Video response is prestine!
7. Video friendly for all games based off of the Unreal engine.

Cons: I'm not making complaints on this part, I would just point this out:
1. For those who want to tiltscreen (clock/counterclockwise) this particular item does not offer it.

Other: I actually have a dual monitor setup on this machine both running at max resolution. Runs very fluid for the games and the Vista Aero feature. Ran Winamp (v5.50) fullscreen visualizations (MilkDrop v2.0d and AVS v2.81d) with very little to no "video chop".

Systems Used:
1. Vista Ultimate SP1 64-bit, ATI 2600 XT via DVI, 8gig RAM
2. Vista Home Prem SP1 32-bit, Intel mobile 945 video card via VGA, 2GIG ram).

Will not fit most Ergotron mounts, including 45-179-195
I bought this monitor and the Ergotron 45-179-195 LX Desk Mount LCD Arm from another online vendor. When I saw that Amazon offered these as a "Better Together" deal (as of this writing on July 12, 2008), I thought I'd better warn Amazonians that you cannot mount this monitor (Samsung 245BW) on the Ergotron 45-179-195 Arm. The Ergotron arm has 75 x 75 mm hole spacing (VESA MIS-D 75), and comes with a 100 x 100 mm adapter (VESA MIS-D 100). The monitor, however, has a hole spacing of 200 x 100 mm (VESA MIS-E). Ergotron makes an adapter plate, but it costs or more through online vendors I checked. I opted to mount an older Samsung 243T I had on the Ergotron stand, then use the new 245BW monitor on its own stand. One more gotcha: there's a hidden screw that must be removed before the monitor will pivot to the portrait position. You must remove the stand attachment from the back of the monitor to access this screw.
I like the monitor fairly well--I have noticed the non-uniform screen brightness problem other reviewers have described, but for everyday use, it's quite serviceable. The stand is better than the stand on my original 243T--much easier to adjust the height, and it pivots as well.

Failed to recognize 1920x1200 resolution
The picture was very nice, and avoided the over-saturation problems many monitors have. But the monitor refused to go higher than 1680x1050 resolution. The configuration information in the monitor was burned wrong, with data from the 22" monitor. This is a fairly rare problem but one a number of people have reported on the Internet. Of course, the Internet was far more helpful than Samsung customer service, which insisted the graphics card was at fault, despite the fact every other monitor I have tried since has worked at 1920x1200.

Other features include 3 GB of installed RAM (8 GB maximum), Nvidia GeForce 8500 GT graphics (with 256 MB of dedicated video memory), Gigabit Ethernet, 15-in-1 memory card reader, up to 8 channels of surround sound output, FM tuner, and a remote control with up to 16 feet of range.

Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center. In addition to easily playing your DVD movies and managing your digital audio library, you'll be able to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV). Vista also integrates new search tools throughout the operating system, includes new parental control features, and offers new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures.

The Basics

  • Processor: With four execution cores, the 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q6600 blows through processor-intensive tasks in demanding multitasking environments and makes the most of highly threaded applications. Whether you're creating multimedia, annihilating your gaming enemies, or running compute-intensive applications at one time, new quad-core processing will change the way you do everything. The Q6600 has a top-of-the-class 1066 MHz front-side bus (FSB) and dual 4 MB L2 caches (for a whopping huge 8 MB shared L2 cache). (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

With four complete execution cores in a single processor, you get four dedicated, physical threads help operating systems and applications deliver additional performance that enhance multi-tasking and multi-threaded performance across many types of applications and work loads. The Smart Memory Access feature improves system performance by hiding memory latency, thus optimizing the use of available computer data bandwidth to provide data to the processor when and where it is needed. The Advanced Digital Media Boost feature effectively doubles the execution speed for instructions used widely in multimedia and graphics applications. And with the Intel 64 Architecture, the processor can access larger amounts of memory. With appropriate 64-bit hardware and software, platforms based on an Intel processor supporting Intel 64 Architecture can allow the use of extended virtual and physical memory.

  • Hard Drive: The incredibly huge 720 GB capacity from the dual 360 GB Serial ATA (SATA) hard drives (7200 RPM) offers a wealth of storage space--enough for storing up to 440 hours of television programming, a vast multimedia collection, or for editing digital video. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.

  • Memory: The 3 GB of installed RAM (PC5300, 2 x 1 GB, 2 x 512 MB) is an excellent start, but this desktop has room enough for 8 GB of RAM (4 x 2 GB) to speed along your multimedia and gaming applications. It also offers a top-of-class 667 MHz speed. To receive the faster data transfer benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.

  • DVD/CD Drive: This HP Elite desktop offers the next generation of DVD entertainment with the HD DVD ROM optical drive, which provides the superior image and sound quality of high-definition images and multichannel surround sound as well as backward compatibility with standard DVD movie discs and content burned onto DVD-R/RW, DVD-RAM. The HD DVD ROM drive offers the following read speeds: 2.4x HD DVD-ROM, 5x DVD-ROM, and 15x CD-ROM.

    It also includes a second optical drive that's compatible with dual-layer (DL) DVD±R discs that can hold up to 8.5 GB of data. It features the following speeds: 8x DVD+R DL, 8x DVD-R DL, 16x for both single-layer DVD±R, 8x DVD+RW, 6x DVD-RW, 12x DVD-RAM, and 40x/32x for CD-R/RW. It reads DVD-ROM discs at 16x and CD-ROMs at 40x.

  • Keyboard & Mouse: This desktop comes with a wireless HP keyboard with extended range (up to 16 feet) and a wireless optical mouse.
Screen, Video & Audio
Video is powered by the integrated, SLI-ready NVidia GeForce 8500 GT graphics/video card with 256 MB of dedicated graphics memory. Windows Vista can also allocate up to 1535 MB of total graphics memory from the system memory. With support for Microsoft DirectX 10 Shader Model 4.0 and High Dynamic-Range Lighting (HDR), it lets you rip through all of today's most advanced and cutting-edge games and applications. Power through games at record speeds with vividly realistic, sun-up to sun-down HDR lighting effects, and crank up 16x full-screen anti-aliasing without missing a beat. The fully unified shader core dynamically allocates processing power to geometry, vertex, physics, or pixel shading operations, delivering up to 2x the gaming performance of prior generation GPUs. And NVidia's SLI technology delivers up to 2x the performance of a single graphics card configuration for unequaled gaming experiences by allowing two graphics cards to run in parallel.

The video card includes composite TV out, DVI video out and HDMI audio/video out options. This PC also offers an integrated audio card that can produce high definition surround sound configurable to 8 speakers.

Networking, Connectivity & Expansion
This desktop can be wirelessly networked with the integrated 54g Wi-Fi LAN (802.11b/g). You also get super-fast wired connectivity via the Gigabit Ethernet port (10/100/1000). For expansion, it includes drive bays that fit an optional HP Personal Media Drive (for adding 500 GB of storage) or an optional HP Pocket Media Drive (for adding 160 GB of storage)--for a total of up to 660 GB of extra storage. For expansion slots, it has one PCI (occupied), two PCI Express x1 (one available), one PCI x16 Express slot (occupied), two 5.25-inch bays (occupied), three 3.5-inch bays (occupied), and the following external ports:

  • 6 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players (2 in front, 4 in rear)
  • 2 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals (1 in front, 1 in rear)
  • Composite video, S-Video, and analog audio inputs
  • Video out: S-Video, DVI, HDMI, and VGA
  • Headphone and microphone jacks
  • Digital SPDIF audio input/output
  • Surround sound speakers--rear, side, center (subwoofer)
  • 2 PS/2 ports for connecting keyboards and mice
  • 15-in-1 media card reader on the front, compatible with CompactFlash (Type I and II), MicroDrive, SmartMedia, Memory Stick/Pro/Duo/Pro Duo, MultiMedia Card, Secure Digital, XD Picture Card, RSMMC, MMC Mobile, MMC+

Customer Reviews

HP Customizable Elite 9000 Series
My review is for my own custom built HP 9000 series, very similar to this one.

I have 4GB of ram the maximum you can have in a 32bit system with windows Vista Premium.

I selected the highest Nvidia graphics card for use whether for TV, Gaming just onlne streaming video and I made sure it was blue ray/HD DVD so I have both as at that time they hadn't chosen. Fortunateky I have both and even had HD DVD's so this way I am ok for Blue Ray as well.

This is one of the best computers I have eve had. I had mine made back in mid December 2007 and I have been running it daily for many hours with virtually little issues or needs to contact support.

I have the HP 24" flat panel monitor and it works flawlessly with the computer.

I recommend before you buy to go to the HP website and even just do a mock custom built machine to see what you want, what they recommend and see the pricing. Then go back to the net, to Amazon to shop for the best price and combo of choices. In many cases you may find exactly what you want already built. All of these computer makers create several commercial spec sytems with more bels and whistles and some with less all taylored to a variety of consumers.

I have the 750GB HD and 4GB of ram and this machine runs fast and quiet from my past large desktop towers and actually much smaller too.

I have loaded the full Adobe CS3 Design Premium Extended, full MS Office 07, Visio Professional, Project Professional along with several other large programs and have had a few open at the same time with very little lag compared to the past.

Like with just about any PC maker they all come with bloatware, not too much in comparison to my Sony laptop but still some. Simple fix is to delete the trial and other things they give or want you to try unless you are interested of course. Trial software though is good, just remember when you are near the end of the trial period so as to NOT sign up or make sure to say NO as you maybe charged. That is rare as most companies will ask several times first. Take on only what you want or need.

I have emailed support most often when needed and usually receive a response a few hours later with links or instructions on a fix. I have had very minor issues and all have been corrected via using the email tech support. Like with almost all computers except Apple iMac you get a 1 year warrenty via phone/email tech support. Although I love Apple computers, their latest all inone desktop comes with 90 days tech support after that you pay. That is unacceptable when paying a premium for any computer in my experience and opinion.

The computer is easy to set up with big diagrams for connections and pretty easy for cable hook up via your cable companies cable box or other ways that are described in the materials. For me it worked fine with a direct cable box coaxcial hookup on the back of the computer.

Remote works fine with the computer as well as the monitor being it is HP and I have BOSE speakers adding in the sound as the HP monitor has rear speakers and of low wattage so needed external to compensate and just turn off the monitor speakers.

All in all I have now had two products in the past year from HP and each have been above my expectations in their operation and customer support has been efficient so far from my personal experience.

Again, research the brands you like, check them out in any store to test them/sample them go to the brand websites, decide your needs and search for the best price before buying.

Great if used as is, ok if you modify
Out of the box this is a great machine. The case is elegant and quiet. 3GB of ram is the optimal configuration for a box running 32-bit vista premium (4GB can't all be accessed). The TV card/Windows media center intergration is flawless. There are a decent about of usb ports, and I have yet to find anything to tax the cpu. The graphics card is a little bit of a letdown. The graphics card is a low end geForce 8400GS. While the rest of the pc's components manage a Windows Experience index of 4.4, the card lowers it to 3.5. Its fine for general use, but you'll only run into that issue if you plan to run a lot of high end games (e.g. crysis).

The only real down side of this machine is that it attempts to guide you down the path of more hp products by embedding a couple of ports for hp portable drives. The front of the machine has two slots avaiable. If you've ever looked for these drives, you'll quickly realize that they're more expensive than any external usb harddrive but are less compatible (read: will only work with another hp machine with the same ports). In addition to being a bad idea, the ports take up crucial real estate needed when trying to add additional drives or access memory modules. Bad HP. This isn't a deal breaker (I love mine), but something to be wary of. Overall a great system.

Definitely a great Computer
It's awesome computer with many excellent features.. I really love it... the wireless mouse and keyboard, the integrated tv card, etc.

HP Pavilion Elite M9160F Desktop PC
There are several reasons why I've only given this computer three stars.

1. It doesn't come with a Vista 64 install disk. This makes it impossible to set it up as a Raid0. It's already set up in a non-raid configuration when you get it, and without a Vista 64 disk, you're stuck.

2. It's under-powered. This thing should really have at least a 500 watt power supply. This makes upgrading a chore, since you WILL have to swap out the power supply.

3. HD DVD: can you say Betamax?

4. The case is too small, and it's further cramped with those proprietary portable media bays. Who is actually going to buy one of those overpriced things when they can buy a 1 terrabyte external hard drive for less money?

5. The hard drives keep parking their heads (clicking) unless you turn off the power saving features.

6. It will be difficult to swap out the optical drives without buying them from HP because of their non-standard appearance.

7. Instead of 4 1GB RAM sticks, it should come with 2 2GB ones. Then upgrading to the maximum 8GB of RAM would be as simple as adding two more 2GB RAM modules. As it stands, you have to swap out all of the installed RAM and buy 4 2GB RAM modules.

Other than that, it's a fast quiet computer. Once you go quad-core, you won't go back. I can watch a movie, whilst running a virus check, whilst compiling a C program without any lag. Also, it's pointless having a 64 bit Operating system unless you're going to take advantage of the ability to install 8 gigabytes of RAM!

Wonderful P.C.
Just connected this new HP P.C. from Amazon. It is wonderful! The speed is great and the memory, 720 GB, will definately solve our previous memory problems. We did a lot of homework in searching for the perfect home business P.C. and we are pleased to have found it!

Optimized for mobile performance, it's powered by the 2.3 GHz AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-66 dual-core processor, which offers 64-bit computing capability and higher throughput for simultaneous computing tasks. Other features include a 250 GB hard drive, 3 GB of installed RAM (4 GB maximum), quad-mode Wi-Fi connectivity (802.11a/b/g/n), Bluetooth connectivity, multi-format/dual-layer LightScribe DVD+/-RW drive (which also burns CDs), ExpressCard slot, NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150 video/graphics card with 559 MB of shared video RAM, and Gigabit Ethernet.

It comes preinstalled with Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium, which includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center. In addition to easily playing your DVD movies and managing your digital audio library, you'll be able to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV). Vista also integrates new search tools throughout the operating system, includes new parental control features, and offers new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures.

The Basics

  • Processor: The 2.3 GHz AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-66 processor offers a dual-core architecture, which delivers additional computing resources to help expand your PC's capabilities by providing higher throughput and simultaneous computing--increasing your performance by up to 80 percent. You'll be able to perform multiple tasks such as digital rendering and gaming all while running virus scan or other background tasks seamlessly thanks to the innovative Direct Connect Architecture. And it's designed to handle simultaneous 32- and 64-bit computing with no degradation in performance. You'll enjoy long battery life thanks to the AMD PowerNow! power management technology, which delivers performance on demand and can extend system battery life up to 65 percent. And the AMD Digital Media XPress technology delivers stellar multimedia performance and playback on digital entertainment such as games, streaming video and audio, DVDs, and music.

Each processing core has a 512 KB L2 cache (for a 1 MB total), and this processor can deliver up to a 1600 MHz system bus for lightning quick computing reflexes. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

  • Hard Drive: The 250 GB Serial ATA hard drive is more than double the average size for notebook PCs, and it offers a fast 5400 RPM disk speed--an improvement over other notebooks with extra-large hard drives. It provides more than enough capacity for storing documents, digital media files, and video editing software. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.

  • Memory: This notebook comes installed with 3 GB of RAM (DDR2), which helps boost the amount of available video RAM that's shared with this notebook's video card. It has a 4 GB RAM capacity.

  • DVD/CD Drive: This multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with writing both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features 4x DVD-R DL Write Once, 2.4x DVD+R DL Write Once, 8x DVD+R, 4x DVD+RW, 8x DVD-R, 4x DVD-RW, 16x DVD-ROM, 40x CD-R, 24x CD-RW, and 40x CD-ROM speeds.

This LightScribe DVD±RW drive lets you laser-etch silkscreen quality text and images on to CDs and DVDs . Your software, PC and discs work together for a no-hassle way to burn just the labels you want. After you burn content, just flip the disc over, reinsert and burn your label--anything from a simple title to a full-disc work of art.

  • Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a 101-key keyboard and a touchpad with on/off button and dedicated vertical/horizontal Scroll Up/Down pad. It also includes two quick-launch buttons (HP QuickPlay Music and DVD).

  • Integrated Fingerprint Reader: A fingerprint reader offers advanced security by using fingerprints instead of standard passwords to access online accounts, such as banks and e-mail. To set up access, each fingerprint is associated with a password through Verisoft Access Manager. Verisoft Single Sign On (SSO) stores user names and passwords to an unlimited number of sites and automatically enters logon credentials. If more than one person uses the notebook PC, each can use a fingerprint to logon to a computer user account and access preset preferences and files.
Screen, Video & Audio
The 12.1-inch LCD screen can swivel 180 degrees, providing optimal angles for viewing DVD movies and business presentations, and it folds flat for working in tight travel spaces such as airplanes or trains. It has a 1280 x 800-pixel resolution. Video is powered by the integrated Nvidia GeForce Go 6150 graphics/video card, which provides up to 559 MB of video memory shared with the system memory. It features NVidia's PureVideo technology--which provides great picture clarity, smooth video, accurate color, and precise image scaling for video content--and full support for Microsoft DirectX 9.0 for stunningly realistic cinematic effects for all DirectX-compatible applications.

The Altec Lansing speakers provide exceptional sound, and a pair of stereo earbud headphones with volume controls is included. You'll be able to privately share enjoyment of multimedia with a friend via the dual headphone jacks. One of the headphone jacks is also compatible with SPDIF digital audio output for home theater surround sound.

Networking, Connectivity & Expansion
Be ready for the next platform in wireless connectivity with this notebook's integrated quad-mode Wi-Fi chip. Based on the draft 802.11n Wi-Fi specification, it offers up to five times the performance and twice the wireless range as existing 802.11g wireless. It's also backward compatible with 802.11b/g networks (commonly found in home routers and Wi-Fi hotspots) as well as 802.11a networks (which has a higher throughput, but more limited range--great for closed office environments). You also get super-fast wired connectivity, with a Gigabit Ethernet port (10/100/1000).

With the Bluetooth connectivity, you can communicate and synchronize with Bluetooth-enabled peripherals such as PDAs and cell phones. This notebook includes a next-generation ExpressCard 34 card slot (though no standard PCMCIA slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features. You get a good offering of connectivity options:

  • 3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players

  • 1 S-Video port for connecting to a TV
  • 1 ExpressCard 34
  • 1 headphone jack (with S/PDIF digital audio compatibility) and 1 microphone jack
  • 1 notebook expansion port 3 (for use with the HP xb3000 Expansion Base or the HP Notebook QuickDock)
  • 2 consumer IR (infrared)--1 on notebook, 1 on LCD panel
  • 5-in-1 memory card reader (Secure Digital, MultiMedia, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, xD Picture Card)
  • Integrated 56K modem (V.90)

Operating System
Windows Vista Home Premium is the operating system for users with advanced computer needs, and it includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center for watching DVD movies and accessing your digital audio library. You can also use Windows Media Center to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV) and to access new kinds of online entertainment content. Computers that include Windows Vista Home Premium and an auxiliary Windows SideShow display will also allow you to access key data even when your computer is off. It is also easier than ever to share files between other PCs in your household and to manage your laptop computer settings to more securely connect via Wi-Fi.

Defective motherboards
The HP PC's are TRASH in my opinion. I bought the DV6226US in March 2007, and my System Board fried just 7-1/2 months later. They replaced it, and 8 months later if fried again - and HP wouldn't cover it. With the excessive heat no wonder! A system board crashing is rare but 2 boards in 16 months is nothing but defective product - pure and simple. DONT BUY THIS PRODUCT

just ok
The holder for the light pen broke on the first day. It only let the pen be inserted part of the way so it would stick out over 1 inch. Calling the HP service number was of little help because they wanted me to send the computer back to them for service which would take at least 2 weeks. So I decided just to live with the pen sticking half way out of the holder. Other than that the computer is ok but the monitor is small and windows vista slows it down.

Watch out for the memory!!!
Windows Vista requires 2GB RAM MINIMUM to run. To run other applications you will need at least 3GB RAM. I had mistakenly gotten a 2GB model and at times it takes 45 seconds just to send soemthing to the recycle bin or else a reboot is required. Painfully SLOW!!!

Also, the tablet doesn't work properly. There is a distinct discrepancy between the location you place the pen and the location the computer recognizes. I gave up on the tablet aspect of my laptop. This laptop also runs really hot. The longer you use, the higher the temperature. The higher the temperature, the slower the laptop. Running it for over three hours without a fan blowing on it is out of the question. The only nice things nice about it are the included games (which you can't uninstall) and the 12.1" size (so light!).

Think I'll upgrade to a Sony. My Sony desktop has been quite reliable for the last 5 years and still running strong. Haha, in fact, it's faster at running graphics applications than the HP, especially after the HP heats up.

Wish i had read this before i bought it....
This computer is really slow... My 2.0 ghz run a lot faster...

For some reason I can not use wireless to conect, and when i can is a an extremely slow speed! After contacting HP service for over 2 hours is still the same...

Due to the high requirements of windows vista, the computer video is really slow, and often crashes.

I wish i didnt buy this computer...

Greal laptop, but some tiny things could be better...
Just got mine about 5 hours ago and love the look and feel of the machine... Vista is just horrible but that can be fixed with a downgrade. My one 'problem' with the design is the battery which kinda sticks out the back making the laptop difficult to handle other than from the front and sides.

One more small detail that bugs me is that the spring loaded slot for the stylus broke almost instantly and now it is very difficult to remove and re-enter... I dunno I guess it's no big loss but it still bothers me that something broke right away.

Overall a great little machine though, I'll update once I've installed some games and programs on it.

Update (5 days after arrival):
I ended up setting it up as a dual-boot machine with both XP and Vista and I have to say I'm VERY happy with the results, XP runs much smoother and faster but Vista still has some options I like so it's the best of both worlds. Vista runs autocad and solid works very smoothly and the games I've tried so far have all worked great at mid to max settings.

After reading some of the other comments about this laptop I have to say the screen is not that blurry (I don't notice anyways)... of course the texture is different because it IS a touch screen after all. Seriously this laptop runs cool and silent compared to all other laptops I've owned and even after being on all day... I wouldn't use it in bed or anything since the bottom vents need to be clear but who uses a laptop in bed that much anyways?

Well worth the $$
This is a very nice set of surround sound speakers for your pc or game console. I am very pleased with mine. I bought these because i had looked at them in Best Buy before and they had excellent sound and capable of excellent bass also.
Many people have said they don't have long enough speaker cables but i actually thought they were pretty generous with the amount supplied.
Great buy for the money!!

Logitech X-540.5.1 Speaker system
I wanted a reasonably priced, easily set-up speaker system with a sub-woofer for my computer. The Logitech fulfilled all these requirements.
I did not put all the speakers around the room as suggested so the surround soiund is not part of my system at present.

The sound is great and almost equal to the more expensive Klipsch system I have on my other computer. I particularly liked the small control unit which is handy nearby and controls not only the volume and on or off but has an input for headphones, if you want to go that way.

Surround sound in the Gazebo
I'm using my X-540 to provide surround sound in my gazebo - and the sound just comes from an ersatz Ipod. Since both the Ipod and the X-540 were purchased on sale, the cost/benefit ratio is really fine - but I had to pay full price for all the extension cables that I had to buy.

On the whole, I'd do it again in a heart beat ;-)

Simply Amazing
I bought this system before 1 month and it has been playing quite well since I bought it. Installation was easy, just plug and play and sound is great. I think for the price, the product is really amazing. If you really love music like I do and don't want to spend too much on the system, this is the one for you. Not very hi-fi but enough to give you a kick while listening. I would highly recommend this product.

Great Speakers
Great speakers for the price. the only downside is the rear speaker cables are a bit short.

The instant AV Mode feature enables you to start watching a DVD or listening to music with the push of a single button--without having to boot up the system--and the convenient, built-in multimedia control buttons also let you control all playback functions.

This notebook is powered by the 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T7250 processor, which offers a top-of-the-line 800 MHz front-side bus speed and 2 MB L2 cache. The Core 2 Duo processor provides an optimized, multithreaded architecture for improved gaming and multitasking performance, as well as excellent battery management. It also includes Intel's 4965 AGN wireless LAN, which will connect to draft 802.11n routers and offers compatibility with 802.11a/b/g networks as well. A built-in 1.3 megapixel digital web camera lets you quickly snap photos and participate in live video chats. Other features include a 14.1-inch XBRITE-ECO screen, extra-large 250 GB hard drive, 2 GB of installed RAM (4 GB maximum capacity), dual-layer DVD±RW drive (which also burns CDs), Bluetooth connectivity, ExpressCard 34 slot, Intel GMA X3100 graphics (with up to 358 MB of total available video memory), and both Memory Stick and SD memory cart slots.

The Basics

  • Processor: The Intel Core 2 Duo T7250 processor has a 2.0 GHz processor speed, super-fast 800 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and a large 2 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

The Intel Core 2 Duo processor has two computational execution cores in a single processor, providing greater system response when running multi-threaded applications simultaneously with no significant increase in power consumption. It's optimized for multitasking and is ready to support the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. It can simultaneously run multiple demanding applications--such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching business productivity applications--while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background. Some of the advanced Intel innovations of the Core 2 Duo processor include:

    • Smart Memory Access: Improves system performance by hiding memory latency, thus optimizing the use of available computer data bandwidth to provide data to the processor when and where it is needed.
    • Advanced Digital Media Boost: Effectively doubles the execution speed for instructions used widely in multimedia and graphics applications.
    • Dynamic Power Coordination: Coordinates Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology and idle power-management state (C-states) transitions independently per core to help save power.
    • Deeper Sleep with Dynamic Cache Sizing: Saves power by flushing cache data to system memory during periods of inactivity to lower CPU voltage.

  • Hard Drive: The extra-large 250 GB Serial ATA hard drive (5400 RPM) provides more than enough capacity for storing a large audio and video library, as well as extra space required for video editing. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.

  • Memory: The 2 GB of installed RAM (2 x 1024 MB DDR2) will satisfy many users, but this notebook's two DIMM slots have a maximum 4 GB RAM capacity--perfect for high-end video editing and 3-D gaming. It also offers a top-of-class 667 MHz speed. To receive the faster data transfer benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.

  • DVD/CD Drive: The dual-layer DVD drive is compatible with a wide range of formats, including both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs, CD-RW discs, and dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can hold up to 8.5 GB of data--great for backing up your MP3 collection or your most important documents. It features the following speeds: 4x for DVD+R DL, 4x for DVD-R DL, 8x for both single layer DVD+R/-R, 8x for single layer DVD+RW, 6x for single layer DVD-RW, 5x for DVD-RAM, and 24x for CD-R/RW. It reads DVD-ROM discs at 8x and CD-ROMs at 24x.

  • Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a standard 82-key keyboard (2mm stroke and 19.05mm pitch) and electro-static two-button touchpad. Playback controls include play/pause, stop, forward, rewind, AV mode, mute, volume +/-, capture, and display off.
Screen, Video & Audio
You'll enjoy razor-sharp graphics and widescreen movies with the 14.1-inch WXGA high-definition screen, with its 1280 x 800-pixel resolution. The XBRITE-ECO technology delivers brilliant colors and stunning clarity with efficient power usage, and it features an anti-reflective coating to minimize reflection and ensure a beautifully clear image from any viewing angle.

Video is powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100, which uses shared video memory (up to 358 MB allocated from the system memory) and provides Windows Vista Aero interface support and enhanced 3-D graphics performance--delivering over 2x scores on 3-DMark 06. Intel Clear Video Technology provides outstanding video playback with sharper image quality, increased clarity, and customizable color controls. It also enables enhanced visual quality of interlaced content on progressive displays.

Networking, Connectivity & Expansion
Be ready for the next platform in wireless connectivity with the integrated quad-mode Intel Wireless 4965AGN Wi-Fi chip. With the Bluetooth connectivity, you can communicate and synchronize with Bluetooth-enabled peripherals such as PDAs and cell phones.

This notebook also includes a next-generation ExpressCard 34 card slot (though no PCMCIA slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features. Here's the full list of connectivity options:

  • 3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
  • Video output: 1 VGA, 1 S-Video
  • 1 ExpressCard/34 slot
  • Memory Stick/Memory Stick DUO slot (with MagicGate functionality)
  • Secure Digital memory card slot (compatible with MMC cards)
  • 1 headphone jack, 1 microphone jack
  • 10/100 Fast Ethernet
  • 56K modem (V.90)

Disappointment only
My excitment of owning a vaio all went into the drain when I got first hand experience of its performance. In general its processing speed is worse than a pentium 3. And I dont have anything saved on my hard drive since I mostly use it for internet browsing. Everytime I switch on my computer I wonder what will go wrong in the processing today. e.g. internet browsers take ages to open, or if you type its takes ages for the text to appear. I have tried everything possible.

Sony is unwilling to admit that they have a defective model. I would not recommend anyone to buy this. HP, IBM or Dell will provide you with better processing speed. Otherwise you are buying a model claiming to be a core 2 duo and you are getting pentium 2 or 3 at best performance. So if this laptop cant take internet browsing... then if you do more stuff I am not sure how it will take.. it may just crash. So BEWARE!!

UPS lost item
UPS lost the package, however Vann's was great and got me a very quick refund.I would buy from Vann's and Amazon again.

Good laptop with a bit of false advertising...
So I read the reviews on here before buying this laptop 3 months ago (thanks!). I bought it for a long backpacking trip - so I wanted something smaller, with long battery life. The reviews here said the battery life was not what it advertised, and the screen can be pretty dim - impossible to see outdoors when you're on low power consumption mode. They were right on both counts. I would not count on more than 2.5 or 3 hours of battery, even just to type or surf the web, and if you're outdoors, maybe less since you'll have to boost the brightness of the screen.

Other than that, after it's gone through all the start up - and all the preloaded programs, it's reasonably fast and a good size for travel, though I think I'd go even smaller for a trip like this - it's a good balance overall. The keyboard is very nice, but the keys click when you type, I'm not too crazy about that, and there is no "end", "page up", etc... which I quite miss.

Rating Likely To Improve
I purchased this lap-top as a birthday present for my wife, having had experienced excellent performance with a VAIO that I purchased for myself in back in 2004. I was a bit leary about making an on line purchase of such a potentially fragile item. Those worries were put to rest upon delivery, as it was apparent that extra care had been taken to ensure that delivery was prompt, and the product arrived in good condition.

My only regret in making this purchase, is that I didn't pay more heed to the concensus on reviews of the VISTA operating system (which came pre-installed on the unit). In the past, I had always heard of, (but pretty well dismissed) all of the negative publicity surrounding the release of a new O.S., because I had never experienced any insurmountable problems with O.S. up-grades over the years, some just took some getting used to. With VISTA however, you can add me to the list of "whiners". So many things are incompatible, and there are so many "unexplainable" malfunctions, that after 3 weeks of unsuccessful back-and-forth communications with Microsoft Vista Support (via another PC I might add, as we were unable to even perform e-mail & on-line functions with VISTA), I finally gave up & "up-graded" to XP. Things have been fine since then.

Love it!!
After a few weeks of contemplation I settled on this as my first laptop for use when I start grad school in the fall. However, I've gotten much more than I expected. The graphics are AWESOME!! It's light and quiet, the keys aren't as hard to use as I'd expected after years of desktop use...I could go on and on : )

There are a few cons- there's a few more programs loaded on it than I think I really need and like most VAIOs it gets a bit hot but generally I have no complaints!!

I would advise that if you want something like this to get the newer model which is only 0 more- the CR420...it's processor is 2.1 GHz and it comes with 3GB of RAM....commit to Sony and enjoy : )

HP officejet 5610 all in one printer, copier, scanner, fax
Value driven product, little deuce coupe of the printers; will be a valuable home office asset for years to come, it does it all.

Out of the box - doesn't work
Right out of the box, it doesn't work. Printer allignment fails - talked to HP support, but their instructions don't work either. Tried following instructions in the manual, but the menus don't seem to agree with what I see on the screen. I'd like to send it back.

Great equipment to have!
We had been in the market for a new printer for about 2 months. Our son will be a senior in high school this year, and we knew we wanted a printer great for text printing for college applications, etc. This unit does it all! I have found the fax machine very handy as well. I am very pleased with our choice!

Nice price, quality issues?
I bought the produce because of my belief in HP products, not to mention the great bang-for-the-buck (which I thought was great).

Unfortunately the first one I received did not work properly. Everything it printed was angled upward from left to right. HP support kind of dragged their feet about swapping it out. Fortunately Amazon swapped it with no questions asked. The second unit has worked properly and I am pleased with it thus far.

Great printer
After using the HP Officejet 5610 All-in-One I can truly say this is one of the finest printers I've had in the price range. It is quiet and the printing is top notch. I can attest to the quality of copying documents and really enjoyed the easy setup procedure when I installed it on my computer. The easy one touch control panel for processing copy jobs is a nice feature also.

Simply the Best External Drive made.
I use external hard drives on all the PC's in my office and home ( 8 in total). I've owned many brands over the last 10 or so years. The first external drive I purchased approx 1999 was an Iomega 60 gig. I still own it and is plugged into one of my desktop Pc's. I originally purhased it becasue Iomega sold me on their Zip drives. Over the years I tried Maxtor's, Western digital and seagates and all have died only the Iomega has survived. We had a good run with western digital but it seemed a few died after only a year and a half. If the line History always repeats itself is true then this drive should be around for years to come.

It's a solid drive that very quite. Hard drives are pretty much all the same with the big difference being how long they last. With my current drive lasting nearly 10 years I only hope the new drives are made as well as the old.

Great for the price
I have had my Iomega desktop hard drive 500 gb for one week. It is very quiet running, fast, and does not heat up like some reviewers indicate in their posts. Most every device puts off some heat, and this external hard drive is not bad at all. I think it is a good product for the price. I store artwork on it and there is no wait time for bringing up the file.

50/50 on this
bought 2 of these; one for work and one for home. The one for work died after a few months - can't even reformat it.

Iomega hard drive
Received the product. Iomega Desktop Hard Drive 500 GB Hi-Speed USB 2.0 External Hard Drive - 33654 It is as advertised. It performs as expected and I'm happy with the purchase. Thanks for consistently good service. Sandy Burke

So far, so good!
After a nightmarish experience with a new laptop computer, I decided to order this to back up all of my files. I've got over 10 years worth of digital pictures and documents, as well as a lot of music. The Iomega Desktop Hard Drive arrived faster than expected, which was great! I plugged it into my macbook and was on my way. The computer recognized the hard drive right away and ran it through my time machine software. I saved everything that I had on to the hard drive and still had plenty of room to spare.

I like that this hard drive comes with a stand so that it can be set up on it's side if you're cramped for desk space. With the fat32 setup, it can work with both my mac and the other pc's in the house. Compared to the other 500gb external hard drives offered, this one had a very reasonable price. Hopefully, I'll get many years of use from it. I'll post an update if there are any changes.
